Commercial Interior Design Jobs Can Be Scary

Common sense and everyone you know will tell you that you should start small when you get out of interior decorating school. Of course, you know better. You can handle anything they throw at you. Besides, interior designer jobs might be plentiful. So one of the first things they throw at you is a barn. At least it's an interior space the size of a barn. Oh dear, what shall you do?

Don't Panic

The first step of every project, from your first class assignment in interior decorating school, through all the interior designer jobs in your career, and starting with this huge commercial interior design undertaking you've gotten yourself into, is "don't panic!"

Take every job one step at a time. There are clear solutions to every design problem. Think of all the tricks and tips you picked up in interior decorating school. Examine each space with a fresh point of view.

Interior Lighting plus Floor and Décor

The barn-like interior design job is not just an idle speculation. One of my professional colleagues had such a job fall in his lap early in his career. The space was a former factory building that had been turned into a very large office, with over 200 employees all in the huge, open area.

He couldn't do anything fancy with the walls since they were a million miles away from each other. The client didn't want anything done to the ceiling. So my friend used an approach he called "floor and décor." He had the floor painted with repeating artistic designs. He added standing bits of art in the walkways of the huge maze and he added exotic interior lighting fixtures to carve out the space even further.

The job was a huge success and the client hired him for a dozen other jobs.
