Interior Design Schools Are the Same - But Different

In one way, almost all top interior design schools are the same. Students learn basic design principles and the use of various textiles and other materials.

Interior design students are usually taught the history of interior design and the evolution of furniture forms. When students receive an interior design degree they know both the artistic and the business information they'll need in their interior design careers.

How are They Different?
One of the things you'll learn - probably in your first interior decorating course - is that interior design jobs consist of much more than choosing pretty colors and filling rooms with interesting furniture. You will earn your interior designer salary by creating designs that fit all the circumstances.

You need to understand the personalities and temperaments of the people who will use the area you are designing. You'll also learn that good designs fit in with their surroundings.

Regional and cultural differences do count. A design that is perfect in New York might be a dud in Florida. That's why, although they all teach the basic principles, a Canadian interior design school is different from California interior design schools or Florida interior design schools.

Does that mean you can never move? Not at all, once you have your interior decorating degree, you'll understand what the differences are and you'll know how to adapt to different environments.

A Tip from Lance:
Try rearranging your furniture for the changing seasons. You can turn a conversation area around so it faces the best window view for spring and summer. When winter comes you will want to look toward the fireplace or just face inward to the center of your nest.
