So You Want to Be a… Museum Display Designer

We are hardwired to learn constantly, but few of us enjoy hitting the books and studying. Museums are a great way to meld entertainment and knowledge into a seamless formula. A well designed exhibition can accomplish the same thing that hours in the library could accomplish. Producing a well designed exhibition is the job of the museum display designer.

What is a museum display designer?
A museum display designer is a person who has graduated from interior design school and works in conjunction with a curator to produce an engaging museum display that conveys useful information while still attracting people of all ages. Whereas an advertising executive must attract people to a product, a museum display designer must attract people to an exhibit. It’s much harder than it sounds, which is why attending interior design school is so essential.

What interior design schools can teach you
Interior design schools will teach you everything you need to know about becoming a museum display designer. You’ll learn lighting, set design, colors, spacing, 2D & 3D art, and materials. In some programs, museum display designer courses will include a little bit about marketing and consumer psychology.

Job prospects for museum display designers
The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that openings for museum display designers will grow as quickly as the national average for other occupations through 2012. Competition for these positions is quite high because museums are finite in number. Having a degree from an interior design school will be essential for employment because of the limited number of potential openings.

Salaries after interior design school
After interior design school, you’ll be eligible for a wide variety of jobs, but should you decide to become a museum display designer, you can expect to make $30,000. This figure varies, however, depending on the skill, exhibition, museum, and location.
