Your Interior Design Job Search

by Wendy Croix
SchoolSmart by Design Columnist

You got your degree in interior design in May. You sent out résumés, scoured the newspapers, searched online, maybe you even interviewed…and you watched your friends start their new jobs in interior design. Now, the summer's half gone, and you're still unemployed. What to do!

Try a Functional Résumé.

If you've got little or no job experience, foreground the skills you've honed in getting your degree. A functional résumé emphasizes a bulleted list of your interior design career skills. Learn to write one at Yahoo! Hot Jobs. Thinking through your skills will make you hunger to put those skills to use.

Modify Your Résumé to Fit Each Interior Design Job Description.

This isn't cheating. You should have several versions of your résumé, each of which emphasizes one of your strengths beyond all others. At the very least, have two or three of the following:
  • an interior design résumé that foregrounds your design skills
  • an interior space-planning résumé that emphasizes your Cad skills
  • a design-related sales résumé that emphasizes your people skills
  • a design-office management résumé that emphasizes your administrative skills

Don't Expect Jobs in Interior Design to Come to You.

If you've planted résumés online, and you're waiting for a response, stop it! Do you really think busy employers will be scouring the web for employees?
  • They call it a job search--not a job come hither. Get searching. Actively.
  • Never mail your résume when you can drop it off. Every contact is an interview waiting to happen.
  • Ask those newly employed classmates for their help. They're now your professional contacts. Pluck up your esteem and meet them socially.
  • Take something in a related field and continue to look. This is your first post-interior design-school job search, not your last.
